This is a collected list of the fanworks produced for the SRS 2012.

Main Rounds

The Main Rounds of the competition are moderately long works produced in response to a specific prompt. Each team's work must focus around that team's chosen rarepair. The works produced are voted on by participants, and the top ten receive points. Please note that works are posted by the team leader, not by the individual creator. Some works are de-anoned in the comments on the results post, or by posting to AO3 (see 'Other').
Bonus Rounds

Bonus Rounds are prompt memes based around a general theme. Works of any length can be produced, and there are no restrictions on the pairings involved. While no points can be earned for these rounds any more, anyone wishing to fill a prompt is welcome to do so.
Other

More works produced for SRS 2012 can be found in the Tumblr tags #srs 2012 and #srs2012, or in the SRS 2012 AO3 collection. Creators may be found via the Team Roster, and the competition results can be found on the Final Leaderboard.

The final Main Round deadline has now passed; the last Bonus Round is closed and MR2 voting is over. With the exception of the voting and point-tallying, the Supernatural Rarepair Shipfest 2012 is over.

Please remember that although the deadline for participation points has passed, late MR3 entries can be submitted for voting points.

A new leaderboard and the Main Round 3 voting post should be up later today.

The Main Round 3 community has been created and all team leaders should have received invitations to it. Please remember to post your entries before the deadline this Saturday, following the rules laid out for MR1 and MR2.

As always, you should contact us immediately if a problem arises with posting, or if a second member of the team requires posting rights due to team leader unavailability or absence.

An AO3 collection for this round can be found at srs2012_r3. This collection is anonymous, and therefore may be posted to before the voting deadline has passed if you wish to do so.

Please also remember that MR2 voting and the final Bonus Round both end this Saturday.

Do you hear the people sing?

Shippers, it is hard to express how proud we are of your perseverance. You have braved the storm of conflicting headcanon, and the doldrums of writer’s block; lost some of your fellow sailors to the tyranny of the waves; navigated between the Scylla of close deadlines and the Charybdis of exacting prompts. Stopped your ears against the siren call of digression and prolixity. You have contended with all manner of adversity in order to reach your chosen destination. And currently, your vessel winds its way towards the conclusion of your voyage.

We shall now reveal the third and final theme for main round.

Your theme is: revolution!

Now, this prompt is less specific than the preceding two, in order to give you the opportunity to choose your setting. It can be AU or canon. Conventional or avant-garde. Plot-filled or introspective. In short, it can be anything, so long as it in some way adheres to the given theme.

Likewise, you may choose to interpret ‘revolution’ as loosely or as literally as you wish. Perhaps you plan on treating us to a historical AU, in which Dean and Raphael fight side by side with Rosa Luxemburg as members of the Spartacus League in postwar Germany. Perhaps angelic politics have reached yet another impasse. Or, perhaps one of your characters has experienced an internal revolution, in which all their prior beliefs have been summarily reversed! The choice, as ever, is yours alone.

Entries can be produced by any team member or collaboratively between team members. Remember that Main Round entries can be in any media or combination of two media, but some media have length restrictions:
  • Written entries must be of length 1000-4000 words.
  • Graphical entries must be no longer than 10 images or panels.
  • Combination written and graphical entries must have 1000-4000 words and no more than 4 images or panels.
Images which contain text, such as speech bubbles or captions, should be followed by a transcription of that text, which counts towards the entry’s word count.

The submission deadline for this round is January 26 2013. A countdown to this deadline can be found here. Entries should be submitted in the same format as Main Round 1, to a comm which will be created closer to the deadline.

Important: Any work you produce for this prompt, whether or not it is chosen as your team’s entry, must be kept anonymous until the voting for this round has ended. An anonymous AO3 collection for this round will be created closer to the deadline.

People, good luck. It’s been a pleasure shipping with you.

The MR2 comm has been created and all team leaders should have received a membership invitation. As with MR1, any team leaders who may be absent or otherwise wish to appoint a deputy to post in their place this round should contact the mods as soon as possible. Deputies appointed for MR1 will not automatically be reappointed unless the mods are contacted again.

There is also an anonymous AO3 collection for anyone wishing to post MR2 works to the site. This can be found at srs2012_r2.

Posting procedure for this round is the same as that detailed for MR1. However, please be aware that, contrary to our beliefs before last round, the mods cannot edit entries once they have been submitted. We therefore ask that you double check your formatting before posting, or you may be asked to resubmit the entry and risk late posting.

In particular, please ensure:
  • Your entry post has a subject in the [MEDIA]: [Title] ([Team]) format, for instance FIC: Woman In White (Team Chuck). Please be aware that your team name is the name of the characters separated by slashes, not the name of the team comm.
  • Your entry begins with a summary, word count (where applicable), list of characters, list of pairings and list of tags.
  • You have included all of the neccessary Required Tags where they are prompted at the start of the entry.
  • The main body of your entry (everything after the tag list) is behind a cut. If for some reason the cut included in the sample formatting does not work, a cut can be added by highlighting the relevant section and using the 'Cut' button on the editor (seventh after the pulldown text size menu) or by going to html view and placing <cut> and </cut> tags around the work.
  • Any images containing text - for instance, captions on graphics, speech on cartoons or formatted poetry - must be followed by a transcript so that your word count can be calculated properly. Failure to do this will result in a 25 point penalty.
You should also be aware that there is an issue with the word counter website and Microsoft Word wordcounts which may cause them to differ significantly. This can and will be corrected by the mods. Provided the word count in your editor is below the 4000 word limit, there should not be an issue.

I’ll take your brain to another dimension. Pay close attention...

Ahoy there, shippers!

Allow us to take the opportunity to congratulate you and your crewmates on the success of your ongoing voyage. You are now roughly a third of the way through this gruelling supernatural odyssey, and we, your mods, could not be prouder.

We will now reveal the theme for the second round of SRS: in-series AU!

By which we mean something quite specific.

This time round, we would like to see your characters interact within one of the alternate universes established in canon. The striking thing about Supernatural the series is its nigh-indefatigable propensity to explore the various possibilities inherent in missed opportunities, and roads not taken. As such, we’d like you to do some exploring of your own. For instance, would the legendary love between Charlie and Meg suffer a dampener in 2014? What if Castiel and Bobby had a Very Special Episode devoted to them in the Supernatural sitcom? More importantly, who’s left alive if the Titanic remains un-sunk?

Note: if your chosen characters do not actually appear in the episodes containing these universes – as will be the case for most of you – use your imagination! If Lucifer were a character in It’s A Terrible Life, what would his job be? If Ruby were a character in Doctor Sexy, would she be the Manipulative But Sexy intern, or a comatose patient admitted for french fry addiction?

Suggested in-series AUs include:
  • 2014!verse: from 5.04, The End. Self-explanatory enough. Sam says yes to Lucifer in Detroit: everything goes to shit; Castiel gets laid approximately a million times more than he ever will in canon; and nobody has enough toilet paper. Dare you let your beloved pairing loose in this environment?
  • meta!verse: the alternate universe in 6.15, The French Mistake. Please note that this is not the same as straight-up RPF. The characters in The French Mistake are parodies of their real life counterparts. Hence, if you decide to explore this ‘verse, we expect to see, for instance, not Misha Collins in all his zany, philanthropic glory, but meta!Misha who is, in actuality, something of a jerk. Likewise, if you are using meta!characters who did not appear in the episode itself – for instance, meta!Alona, or meta!Mark - we would expect to see them equivalently parodied.
  • It’s A Terrible Life!verse: from episode 4.17, It’s A Terrible Life. In which everyone has a soul-crushing corporate job that they secretly hate.
  • What Is And Never Should Be!verse: from episode 2.20, What Is And Never Should Be. In which Dean’s wish-fulfilment fantasies create a less-than-ideal universe.
  • Doctor Sexy, M.D.: this one’s self-explanatory. Have fun, kids.
  • Any of the universes from Changing Channels: 5.08, Changing Channels, and yeah, we all know this one. You can drop your characters into the Supernatural sitcom. Try your luck with the weirdass game show where everyone gets punched in the balls, and blunt, accusatory questions about people’s personal lives fly left, right and centre. Crack some truly terrible puns in what is totally not a CSI: Miami rip-off. Alternatively, damned if we’re going to stand in the way of anyone desperate to write an AU based on the “I have genital herpes” universe.
  • My Heart Will Go On!verse: from 6.17, My Heart Will Go On. How will your characters cope in a world without the Titanic? More importantly, what kind of major knock-on effects has Balthazar’s minor historical modification managed to accumulate?
Please note that this is not a definitive list of the available options! If you can think of an in-series AU that we’ve managed to miss, feel free to pursue it. On the other hand, if you’re feeling unsure, you might want to message us in order to check that it fits the criteria.

The submission deadline for this round is January 5 2013.

Entries for Main Round One need to be submitted by posting them to the Main Round One comm. All team leaders or their appointed replacements should have been invited to this comm already, and have posting rights. If they do not, they should contact the mods immediately.

Formatting for entries is detailed below. Everything within [square brackets], including the square brackets themselves, should be deleted and replaced with the specifics of your entry.

The title for the entry post must be in the following format:

[MEDIA]: [Title] ([Team])

For example:

FIC: The Woman In White (Team Chuck)

When creating the body of the post, you should navigate to the HTML tab at the top of the post editor (next to the subject line) and copy-paste the following.

You can then continue editing in normal view or HTML as you prefer and the correct formatting should be produced.

The mods will be using wordcounter.net for consistency and openness in word counts. However, you can use other word count software (which may produce slightly different figures) provided your word count falls within the limits for the media you have chosen.

Please remember that any text within images should be captioned, and will count towards the total word count. The full list of required tags can be found in the Tagging Policy.

Entries must be submitted by midday GMT, December 15 2012 in order to earn participation points for this round. Late entries will be posted late, but may still be voted for and receive placement points.

Note: Only one entry per team can be submitted. If there is some problem and you need to resubmit your entry, please contact the mods to alert them to this. Teams which submit multiple entries without contacting the mods will have points deducted.

The list of required tags for the SRS Main Rounds is as follows:
  • Character death
  • Consent issues
  • Dub-con
  • Graphic violence
  • Incest
  • Non-con
  • NSFW
  • Rape
  • Sexual content
  • Suicide
  • Underage
You must list these tags on all Main Rounds entries to which they apply, or face a point penalty. If you wish to do so, you may optionally include any other tags you feel suitable, but these will not be enforced by the mods in any way.

In Bonus Rounds, you can list tags at the top of the work if you wish, but the only required tag is NSFW, which indicates that content should not be viewed in public. Please note that NSFW includes any level of sexual content, graphic violence or injury, and any other content which may cause concern from those nearby. The holiday season is here; please respect those participants who are around elderly relatives.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes (Turn and face the stranger...)

And finally, the theme for SRS Round 1 is revealed: species swap!

For this round, we would like to see your chosen pairing, threesome, or, indeed, foursome, in a canon-based AU in which all two, three or four of them happen to be a different species. For instance, if one of your characters is human, we would like to see how things would change if they were, say, an angel. If they are an angel, what would they be like as a demon? Alternatively, what if they were all monsters? How does this affect their moral perspective? How does it challenge the dynamic between your pairing? Whether your happy, harmonious human/human pairing has metamorphosed into forbidden lust between a pagan god and a wendigo, or whether your emotionally fraught angelcest has been transformed into a lackadaisical, kill-happy demonic romp through the graveyards of Wisconsin, something is bound to have altered.

Remember, even if your chosen characters are of the same species in canon, they do not have to be from the same species in your AU. For example, if you were a member of the (non-existent) Team Anna/Gabriel , you could easily make Anna a crossroads demon, and Gabriel a werewolf, and proceed to document the vicissitudes of their gore-spattered love. Alternatively, they could both be vengeful spirits, caught between their feelings for each other, and the uncontrollable urge to drop a tonne of bricks on their killers’ skulls. In short? Go nuts!

Note that we want to see an AU in which these characters have always [edit: or at least, for a significant time period] belonged to a different species, not a story in the canon universe where the characters have been suddenly transformed.

[ Edit: You are welcome to include species not featured in the Supernatural canon, or a different take on species which have been. However, your fic should be understandable with no other reference than the TV series, so any species from other sources should be briefly explained where neccessary.]

If you wish to include characters other than those in your ship, it is your decision as to whether they will be species-swapped or not. However, we would like to see all of the characters within your ship species-swapped.

This prompt is open to your interpretation, but if you don’t have any ideas, you might want to consider the following:
  • How do your characters’ respective upbringings now differ? How does this impact their personalities and outlook?
  • Who are their family? Is it different from before? How much do they care about them?
  • What are their new motivations and goals?
  • How does this affect your ship? Do they find it easier or more difficult to understand one another? Are there any parallels between the characters that only become apparent in this setting?
  • Are your characters now enemies, or has the species swap made them allies?

Entries can be produced by any team member or collaboratively between team members. Remember that Main Round entries can be in any media or combination of two media, but some media have length restrictions:
  • Written entries must be of length 1000-4000 words.
  • Graphical entries must be no longer than 10 images or panels.
  • Combination written and graphical entries must have 1000-4000 words and no more than 4 images or panels.
Images which contain text, such as speech bubbles or captions, should be followed by a transcription of that text, which counts towards the entry’s word count.

The submission deadline for this round is midday GMT, December 15 2012. Information on how to submit entries is now available here.

Important: Any work you produce for this prompt, whether or not it is chosen as your team’s entry, must be kept anonymous until the voting for this round has ended. An anonymous AO3 collection for this round will be created closer to the deadline.
