Coincidentally enough, it's not before the death of Dean that Sam learns he has another brother - this one he managed to save. It doesn't solve anything, but maybe it's a good enough reason for staying alive a little bit more (because family doesn't end in blood). Adam for his part just isn't sure what he's supposed to do with all this.
